This is home of the ultimate Portuguese sandwich: the francesinha. Honestly you can find these at almost any Portuguese restaurant, but I chose to come to this specific location because I wanted to follow in the footsteps of Anthony Bourdain, who came here during his second visit to Porto. Watch out for a couple of locations that try to claim the have the best in the city (O Afonso was not one of them), they looked a bit gimmicky from the outside.
O Afonso’s was tasty and they are ultra generous with their secret sauce, which comes in a second serving if/when your original sauce begins to run out.
The sandwich is extremely heavy and not for the faint of heart. I recommend splitting one with another person to shorten the length of the food coma that will inevitably follow.

It was one of the best Francisinhas that I have eaten in my life. This place is dedicated for this meal and don’t go and try something different. I had classical beef version. Very tasty and very good service. Make sure you have batatas as well. Lots of drinking options. Prices are more than fair. Service is very good .

I am writing to share how much I enjoyed my recent visit to your establishment. Despite the rainy evening, we experienced wonderful service and truly delicious food.
I will highly recommend this place to others and look forward to visiting again soon.

🇵🇹 Francesinha in Porto: The Ultimate Sandwich Experience
The Francesinha is Porto’s most iconic dish—a decadent, belly-filling sandwich that’s more ritual than meal. Invented in the 1950s by Daniel Silva, who adapted the French croque monsieur into something far more indulgent, it’s now a symbol of northern Portuguese cuisine Time Out.
O Afonso is the place to go !!!

There’s no quicker path to start a fight than to ask who served the best francesinha- but most people from Porto will list this location as a top contender! Excellent fast and friendly service, generous portions. And you should not expect this, but my server was kind enough to give me a free taste of some aged port wine on the house! Anthony Bourdain would have loved this place- come check them out!
